Every new hurdle Porto cross in the 2008-09 Champions League is a potential embarrassment to Uefa, the competition’s governors and European football’s judges of fair play.

Last summer, Uefa thought they had grounds to exclude the serial champions of Portugal from their tournaments. Portuguese authorities investigating the links between senior Porto directors and local referees concluded their “Golden Whistle” probe with the observation that the 2004 league campaign had been affected by referees unfairly influenced by the club.

That title triumph, achieved with Jose Mourinho as head coach of Porto — he was in no way implicated in the allegations — would be retrospectively downsized by six points. Porto remained champions with that deduction and, but for a short Benfica renaissance, the domestic momentum has stayed with the club from the north. In May, they should collect their fourth successive Superliga title.

Juventus, for one, might raise their eyebrows if Porto reach, say, the semi-finals of the Champions League next month. The Italian club served a two-year ban from European competition for meddling with the minds of referees in Serie A. But Uefa found Porto’s circumstances sufficiently distinct to allow them into a competition they won under Mourinho and where they maintain by far the most impressive record of any Portuguese club this side of the millennium.
